Design Specification

Design Specifications describe how a system performs the requirements outlined in the Functional Requirements. Depending on the system, this can include instructions on testing specific requirements, configuration settings, or review of functions or code.

A format specification consists a pair of parentheses enclosing a list of items called edit descriptors. Any blanks before the left parenthesis will be ignored and (except in a FORMAT statement) all characters after the matching right parenthesis are ignored.

Unlike a code or standard, which can apply broadly to an industry and region, specifications outline the requirements of a specific company or product.
